Importance of testing private water supplies Water from private water supplies should be routinely tested twice a year for Total Coliform and E.coli when the water supply is most at risk, such as after the spring thaw and during the autumn rainy season. Testing should be done regardless of any water treatment devices that may be installed on the water system.

Remove the tap screen or other devices attached to the tap spout.
Turn on cold water in your kitchen or bathroom and run water for at least 3 to 5 minutes. Be careful not to touch the faucet.

Coliform: No private or semi-public water sample should contain coliform bacteria. The presence of total coliform bacteria in the absence of E.coli indicates the well is prone to surface water infiltration and therefore at risk of fecal contamination.

Total dissolved solids (TDS): Domestic water should not exceed 500 ppm

According to the National Water Quality Association, 56% of all people are worried about the quality of municipally treated tap water. The following chlorinating procedure for water wells is to be considered as a temporary solution only.

Store enough water to meet household needs for a minimum of 24 hours.
By-pass filters, water conditioners, or any type of water treatment equipment.
Use approximately 3.5 litres of regular unscented household bleach per 50 feet of well depth.
